Thinking of Joining A Sorority?

Consider these questions and answers before making that decision

What is a Sorority?

A sorority is defined as a women's student organization that is formed chiefly for social purposes and has a name consisting of Greek letters. However, sororities, especially historically African-American sororities, offer much more than just membership or social purposes. A sorority provides academic enhancement, friendship, development of leadership skills and the opportunity to serve the community in a variety of ways. As a national organization, a sorority generates personal and professional growth through networking and opportunities well beyond your college years.
Why do you want to belong to a Sorority?
This is a question that needs to be taken SERIOUSLY and should be well thought out and answered honestly. Is there any one right magic answer? Of course not, but it should be answered from the heart.

How do you know which is right for you?

The answer to this question can only come after you DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! Being a part of a sorority is a life-time commitment. You need to know what you are getting into. You would not go to college without researching your choices first, and the same goes when you begin to consider sorority life. The Internet is a great place to start your research.
Should you make your interest known early?
How else are you going to become a part of this organization unless you let us know that you are interested?! The key is to go about it in a discreet and professional manner. Just be yourself and let us know that you would like additional information on the sorority. It is ok to let us know that you are interested. Getting to know us does not guarantee membership, but it is a great start as you consider your sorority choice.
How do you meet the members of the sorority you wish to belong to?
The best way is to get out there and be active on campus. Most Greeks are "VERY ACTIVE" on the yard. They are members in other organizations, Student Council, Black Student Union, tutors, etc. You are bound to encounter someone who is a part of the sorority you wish to belong to. If you see us on the yard, speak and say hello. You can feel free to introduce yourself or email us for more information. Also, come to our events and activities.  If you only come to the Interest Meeting, you have not seen all of the things our sorority has to offer nor have you given us the chance to get to know you; if we don’t know you, we will not invite you into our family.
What is the sorority looking for in a potential member?
We look for several things in a potential member: someone who is smart, dedicated, focused and well rounded: someone who can manage their time and balance their schoolwork with greek life: basically someone who will be a positive addition to our chapter. We look for women with the same charisma that brought our founders together back in 1922. Potential members must not only meet the standard requirements, they must also demonstrate a spirit of excellence and be willing to represent Sigma wherever she may go. Sigma Gamma Rho is a sorority that prides itself on strong, motivated women, thus we search for the same in potential members.
What if you do not have the grades to become a member of a sorority?
Well that is easy, WORK ON THEM!! Improve your grades not just to become a member of a sorority, but do better for yourself. Your education is MOST IMPORTANT. This is, after all, the reason you are in college in the first place. Our sorority was founded by women who were educators and who believed that education is most important. Education, not sorority life, is what’s most important.
Ever wonder why you may have been rejected from a particular sorority, even though you had the minimum GPA?
Just because you have the required grade point average does not mean that you will definitely be asked to become a member. Many women are interested in membership to a sorority, but membership is extended only to the select, outstanding few with a history of community service and skills that would make them a valuable member. Sorority life is 95% service and work, 5% fun and parties, so we want assurance that you are willing to put in the work necessary for the success of Sigma.
I want to step, do the call and be popular!
If this has ever come out of your mouth, you are DEFINITELY not ready to become greek. Being a member of a sorority is not just about the colors, stepping and the call. It is about uplifting yourself and the community. Partying is such a small aspect to our world and is an unrealistic reason to want to join. In addition, if you are unpopular before you join a sorority, membership will not gain you a sudden boost in popularity.
What are Informational and Rush events?
An informational or interest meeting is when a sorority has an open house, for women who are either interested in that sorority or just need information on Greek life period. It is an invitation to learn more about us. A rush is a formal sorority event where interested young ladies officially express interest in joining. Sigma Gamma Rho Formal Rush is by invitation only, so it is important to express your interest early.
As a Freshman should you go to a sorority's informational?
Yes!! Each sorority has different requirements for when you can become a member and if you are interested in becoming a part of that organization in the future, you should know the requirements early. In most cases, you have a better chance of becoming a member if you apply, for example, as a sophomore rather than a senior in college.
I heard that if you are start doing favors for sorority members or are pre-pledged, then you will automatically become a member of that sorority?
There are no guarantees that you will EVER become a member of that sorority. Favors do not guarantee membership. Do not EVER let your quest to become a member of any sorority interfere with your feelings of SELF-WORTH and COMMON SENSE.
How much is it to become a member of a Sorority?
Membership fees include an initial lump sum and annual dues payable to your chapter and national headquarters. Every sorority is different so you must inquire. And keep in mind, membership is for life, therefore there is a lifetime financial commitment as well.
A final bit of advice is to ask, ask, ask. No question is a dumb question. If you are truly interested in becoming greek, researching and asking questions is the best way to find the sorority that suits your needs. Don’t depend on hearsay, find out for yourself!
